Our students have returned from an outstanding four day residential to St Andrews in partnership with the London Academy of Excellence, where they experienced a truly immersive introduction to university life and the opportunities that higher education can offer.

Throughout the week, students took part in a range of academic and enrichment activities designed to give them an authentic insight into university study. They attended engaging taster lectures delivered by leading academics across a variety of subjects, explored the university application process and student finance, and heard directly from current university students about their experiences of higher education. The LST students had the chance to tour the outstanding facilities at the University of St Andrews before researching potential future university destinations and confidently presenting their findings to an audience of their peers.

The residential was about far more than the academic experience. Students had the opportunity to experience what university life is really like by living independently in student halls, exploring a new city and gaining an understanding of the traditions and culture of one of the world's most prestigious collegiate universities. The experience encouraged them to think beyond school, broaden their aspirations and gain confidence in the opportunities available to them.

The trip brought together students from across the Laidlaw Schools Trust, including Oxclose Academy, Sedgefield Community College, Academy 360 and Excelsior Academy. Working alongside students from different schools encouraged everyone to step outside of their comfort zones, build new friendships and experience what it feels like to start university surrounded by new people. This was consistently highlighted by students as one of the most rewarding aspects of the week.

Alongside the university experience, students explored the local area, visiting the historic town centre, St Andrews Cathedral and the iconic pier while learning about the history, religion and geographical significance of the area. They also had the opportunity to walk across the famous Old Course, recognised as the oldest golf course in the world.

Evenings were filled with opportunities to strengthen friendships and develop teamwork through a range of activities. Students enjoyed a mixed school quiz on the first evening before taking part in a Traitors inspired challenge that tested their communication, teamwork and problem solving skills. The week concluded with some unusually beautiful Scottish weather, allowing everyone to relax and reflect together on the stunning West Sands Beach. Whether playing rounders, football or simply enjoying the scenery in good company, it provided the perfect end to an unforgettable experience. The evening was rounded off by watching the football together, creating another memorable shared experience despite the result.

This residential has given our students far more than an insight into university. It has broadened horizons, increased confidence, developed independence and shown them that a wealth of opportunities is within their reach. Every student embraced the experience with enthusiasm, maturity and a willingness to challenge themselves, and they should all be incredibly proud of what they have achieved.

Well done to every student who took part. You represented our schools exceptionally well and should be immensely proud of yourselves. We look forward to seeing how this experience inspires your future ambitions.
