Terry and Lisa from Kier Construction recently visited Oxclose Community Academy to challenge stereotypes about careers in the construction industry and introduce Year 7 students to the exciting opportunities within the sector.

The session was part of Kierriculum, a new educational initiative designed to tackle the skills shortage in construction by inspiring the next generation. By showcasing real-world applications of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), the program aims to address the “missing million” — the gap in skilled professionals within the industry.

During the interactive session, students participated in engaging tasks and games to explore engineering and building techniques. One of the highlights was a challenge to build a 4-meter tower using only sticks, emphasising teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving. These hands-on experiences not only fostered technical skills but also sparked curiosity about construction careers.

Students also had the chance to quiz Terry and Lisa on their roles, gaining insights into their career journeys and the diverse pathways available in the construction sector.

The visit left a lasting impression on both students and staff. Thank you to Terry and Lisa for delivering such an impactful session and inspiring the next generation of STEM enthusiasts and construction professionals!
