English Department Intent

"As English is the foundation for all other subjects, here at Oxclose Community Academy, the English Department is dedicated to building on the vital foundations laid at Key Stages 1 and 2, and promoting a passion for the subject within all students. This is achieved through providing an enjoyable, varied and engaging curriculum. We hope to encourage a love for reading that allows pupils to not only read for pleasure, but to read widely and independently; give pupils the confidence to express themselves creatively and provide the necessary tools to enable them to develop further when they leave us."

stimulating, safe engaging environment. We hope they become confident readers and fluent writers who have the skills to express themselves as well as developing an understanding of a variety of cultures. Lessons across bath Key Stages do not only prepare pupils for vital

The subject also supports pupils in accessing other subjects as the skills they develop are imperative across all areas of the curriculum. While many of these skills are developed in the classroom, pupils are given the opportunities to take part in after school clubs, including homework support and book groups. Trips to New York and the theatre also broaden the pupils’ cultural development.

The teachers In the department offer a wealth of

experience and expertise in all areas of the English

As a foundation subject that will support pupils in all areas of school, it is imperative that we are constantly renewing our processes and are changing to meet the needs of all pupils. This means never thinking that your work is done and always looking for improvements. Staff regularly take part in department and whole school CPD to continue to develop. As a department, we work together to improve our knowledge of exams, including seeking support from exam markers within the department and outside agencies.
