Physical Education Department Intent

The world in which we operate has changed considerably in these last few years. Student’s health, fitness and mental wellbeing are paramount in our focus, with children’s lives are now also being transformed by technology. The alarming trend of recent times has seen the continued decline in children’s wellbeing. Tackling that decline will be at the core of everything we do at Oxclose Community Academy.

A generation is growing up ill-equipped to deal with the challenges of the 21st century. Children are struggling with their mental health while grappling with the pressures of social media, shifts in personal relationships, rising levels of exam stress and a decline in empathy and resilience. Meanwhile, nationally one in five children are now classed as obese by the time they leave primary school. One in three are overweight. At Oxclose, we are constantly striving to reverse this trend. Our current Year 8 students were weighed and measured in December 2021. This year group are slightly healthier than national results. 186 students were weighed and measured. 3 (1.6%) were underweight, 121 (65%) at a healthy weight, 29 (15.5%) overweight and 33 (17.7%) very overweight.

As a PE department we know that sport, play and physical activity hold the key to tackling so many of these challenges. But something isn’t working. Children have never been less active and the young people who are most in need of sport’s transformative power are the most likely to miss out. We aim to create a future where every child enjoys the life-changing benefits that come from sport, physical education and physical activity. We aim to use sport to improve children’s wellbeing and give them a brighter future.

The PE department understand why we place a large emphasis on taking part in sporting activities. The huge range of benefits physical education, sport, and regular exercise can have on our students are so wide ranging. Sport teaches us life lessons; reduces anxiety and stress; increases self-confidence and self-esteem; reduces obesity; improves sleep; improves our cognitive abilities; builds cardiovascular endurance; teaches children about values; helps to build resilience; increases strength and muscular endurance; teaches respect; teaches emotional control; helps children learn from failure; improves communication skills; improves problem solving skills; reduces tension; stimulates growth of brain cells; boosts immune system and reduces depression.

We aim to use the power of Sport, Physical Education and Physical Activity to build individual life skills of Confidence, Resilience, Teamwork and Creativity. We aim to use the power of Physical Education to build connections between people including developing community cohesion, inclusive opportunities and equality of access. We aim to build enhanced support networks including young people and our PE teachers, families, coaches and community partners. We aim to create greater life chances through greater attainment and greater achievement. We aim to increase life chances through improved physical, social and emotional well-being and improve life chances through promoting healthier lifestyles. Happier, healthier young people achieve their potential and make better friends, family and neighbours. They also make better employees, colleagues and citizens.
